Information for Transfer Applicants

JD candidates who have successfully completed no more than three full-time or four part-time semesters of course work at another law school's JD program may apply for admission to BYU Law as a transfer student.

A transfer applicant’s current class standing/rank is the primary consideration in assessing transfer applications. For example, performance in the top third of a similarly ranked law school is a positive consideration, while performance in the bottom half is more likely to result in denial of admission. The scholastic reputation of the law school the applicant has attended will factor into this general rule.

Acceptance of credits earned at another law school is at the discretion of the Associate Dean for Research and Academic Affairs, and all transfer credits will appear on the student’s BYU Law Progress Report as a pass.

Completed applications are due June 30, 2026.

Final grades and class ranks from the semester ending just prior to the June 30th deadline must be submitted. Applications can be supplemented after the June 30th deadline as necessary to provide final grades and class ranks from the student’s current institution.

Although the application deadline is June 30, 2026, we consider applications on a rolling basis and encourage prospective transfer students to apply as soon as possible.

Information for Visiting Applicants

JD candidates who have completed at least two full-time or three part-time semesters of course work at another law school may apply to be a visiting student. A visit may last no more than two semesters, and credits earned at BYU Law as a visiting student will be transferred back to the student’s home law school to be applied toward that school’s graduation requirements.

Visiting student applications for the 2026 Winter Semester must be completed by November 5, 2025. Visiting Student applications for the 2026 Fall Semester must be completed by June 30, 2026.
